I have always mixed my henna powder with water but HennaHelen's explanation of the scientific reason to add some kind of acid makes sense. It adds depth to the colour. I recently discovered some interesting options of what to mix the henna powder with. Apparently, using dry red wine instead of water will bring out the most red so keep that half-finished bottle (not many half-finished wine bottles in my household!). Lemon juice or chamomile tea gives hair a golden undertone and if you would like more auburn, use coffee or black tea.

I use about 1/3 cup of henna 2/3 cup indigo and 1/6th block of a lush coco noir crushed with a knife. I just add luke warm water to make a yogurt like paste.Wait for half to one hour and apply to roots. I cover with a plastic cap and wait for one and one half to two hours and wash it off in the shower. I shampoo twice and then condition with a tsp of Aussie 3 min miracle. The hair come out lush, black, manageable and shiny. I get complements even from passersby on the health of my hair!

I use approximately 30 gm henna and 60 gm indigo, mix it with 300ml lukewarm water and leave for 1 hour. Then I just stir the paste to remove lumps, adding a touch more water if I feel it will not adhere properly and apply to hair. Depending on time constraints,I leave it on for anything between 1-4 hours covered with a shower cap. The longer I leave it, the more intense the colour and it keeps darkening for about a day. Then I shampoo it as normal and don't need conditioner as henna makes it soft.
