My first favourite would have to be lavender - so versatile and blends with so many other oils wonderfully. It's mild and relaxing.

I also love ylang ylang - feel that it's a fairly sensual aroma but can be a little overpowering - a little goes a long way.

I also enjoy the citrus fragrances i.e. lemon and orange, as they are so cleansing and refreshing.

What are your favourites?

Ooo Helen, I think we've got the same tastes in essential oils lol. I do also love Mandarin, Eucalyptus for when I've got a cold and also the smell of Clary Sage - this will forever remind me of giving birth to my children plus being there to support other mums as their doula, such a gorgeous smell.

Wow, you are a doula? That's fantastic - how does one "train" to become a doula? I love that women are wanting to go back to the "natural" way of giving birth, with support rather than constant medical intervention.

I read somewhere that you are normally guided by memories when it comes to scents - so if you experienced something pleasant and associate a particular smell with it then you are more likely to feel relaxed when you smell it again. I am fascinated by how our sense of smell can actually control our moods.

Hi Helen

Sorry just seen this message. I attended a training course run by Doula UK (www.doula.org.uk), took 6 months but a lot of training is 'on the job' and you have an assessor who assesses each of your birth clients' records. If she recommends you as a doula after attending four births, you then move from being a 'trainee' to a 'recognised' doula. I was 'recognised in November last year. Unfortunately around the same time (actually at my last client's birth) I was in so much pain I ended up being hospitalised only to find out I had a prolapsed disc in my lower back. I was operated on in May this year but I'm still not right and now I don't think I could be a doula again for physical reasons. It really is such a privilege though to be their with mum/family witnessing such a miracle. Loved every minute.

I do still have a website if you're interested but it will cease next year sometime http://www.doulabynature.co.uk

I use essential oils mainly in an oil burner and like to try different oils. I love cooking Indian food but don't like the lingering 'curry' smell. It might interest you all to know that using a few drops of 'geranium' in the oil burner is the most effective way to banish curry smells from your house.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, if you don't like the smell of henna and indigo (I like henna but find indigo unpleasant), putting a few drops of your favourite essential oil in the henna and indigo mixture makes your hair smell lovely.

Benzoin has to be one of my favourite essential oils, it has a slight vanillary aroma, it is such a soothing oil & wonderful for soothing coughs, especially at night time. For all those with young children, who hear every cough of theirs during the night, Benzoin is fabulous. I wish I had known about it when my boys were small but I use it for them now & manage to sleep as it does stop them coughing.

I have so many 'favourite' essential oil aroma's, Frankincense, Roman Camomile, Eucalyptus - a must if anyone dares to bring a sniffle into the house & Lemon, wonderfully fresh, clean & uplifting.

I love woody scents like guaiacwood & vertivert. Also love soft scented rose absolute.
