Hi Joyce, I hope someone with more knowledge about aromatherapy will add to this.
According to my research, massage is certainly good for people with high BP and diabetes because it helps with circulation problems but I was surprised to find out that certain oils are supposed to be harmful.
For diabetes, avoid angelica oil but use geranium, juniper and eucalyptus. For high BP, the list is longer-rosemary, sage, thyme and hyssop are to be avoided but lavender, marjoram, melissa and ylang-ylang are recommended.
I am curious to know if that applies to the actual herbs as well or just their essential oils? Does anyone know?
Regards, Jyoti

Hi Joyce

I have clients who have diabetes and use essential oils & essential oil products with no problem.
The best advice is always, no matter what condition you have or if you are using essential oil products for the first time, is always to do a spot test first, try an inconspicuous area. If there is no reaction within 24-48 hours you should be fine but ALWAYS cease using a product if you notice any reaction.
Blood pressure - there are oils as Jyoti has said that should be avoided with high blood pressure & she is quite right about the ones to avoid. They can be used to raise blood pressure for those who have Hypotension & need to be avoided by those with Hypertension.

Essential oils which can help to lower blood pressure are, Roman Camomile, Bergamot, Neroli, Rose & Frankincense. Lavender can be useful but do not use excessively otherwise it can become a stimulant & have the opposite effect of the one you are aiming to achieve.
These oils are all sedative oils & are helpful in aiding the body & mind to relax, be soothed & ease stresses & tensions. All have anti-depressant properties & uplift the spirit.

Choosing oils which are relaxing & even help you to sleep better or to energise can have a positive effect upon lowering blood pressure. The techniques of how to use the oils can also be of importance too.
